What Is Engineered Wood Flooring?

Engineered wood flooring is crafted from multiple layers of wood to provide superior strength and stability. The core layers are usually made from plywood, eucalyptus, or hevea, to offer durability. On top of these layers is a wear layer — a thin, high-quality hardwood surface, typically 2 to 6mm thick, made from species like walnut or oak.

This top layer gives engineered flooring its authentic appearance, ensuring you get the natural beauty and texture you desire, but with improved resistance to temperature and humidity changes.

Engineered wood comes in variety of grades, finishes, lengths and width. An A or B grade will usually have little knots. Most engineered wood will usually be grade C unless specified.

Engineered wood can be installed floating, glued or nailed. Most are fitted on a suitable underlay.

Depending on veneer thickness they can be sanded and refinished once or twice.

Most engineered wood flooring comes prefinished, and the two main finishing methods are oil and lacquer.

Oil = Natural look, easy to repair, more upkeep.
Lacquer = Strong surface, low maintenance, harder to repair.

What is Laminate Flooring?

Laminate flooring is a multi-layer synthetic flooring product designed to imitate the look of real wood, stone, or tile — but at a lower cost and with easier maintenance. It’s not made from solid or engineered wood, but instead uses a printed image layer under a protective surface.
Laminate flooring is more affordable than engineered wood, more scratch and fade resistant than engineered wood thus making it suitable for heavy traffic areas. Laminate floors are fitted floating on underlay. Laminate cannot be sanded or refinished — once it’s worn out, it must be replaced.
